Build Power BI reports that transform and visualise large, complex datasets into meaningful info

Updated: Jul 23, 2022

Power BI is a business intelligence and analytics tool that allows you to build interactive reports and visualisations that can be easily published and shared with others within your organisation - and outside of your organisation. One of Power BI's strengths is that it can connect to many different data sources and more connections are being added daily!

PowerBI is the ideal reporting tool for any organisation and local government department. The example below is a simple report project showing some Infrastructure Asset Class information.

Power BI Bookmarks and Buttons

In the example above, I made use of Power BI's bookmarks and buttons functionality and built a menu page to help users to easily navigate through the

various pages.

Publish and Share Power BI

After you've built your awesome Power BI Reports, you can publish them and share them with your colleagues. Power BI's other main strength is that you can share, collaborate, and distribute information efficiently to other users.

Share Button

Sharing is the easiest way to give people in your organisation access to your reports. Simply click on the Share button in the dashboard or report and then share it with other users in your organisation, by group, or individual. Coworkers viewing your report or dashboard will be able to see the same data as you, but do not have the rights to edit the data.

Embed Code

You can also create an iframe code or an embed code from your Power BI Report which allows you to embed your report into any webpage, sharepoint, blog, etc with no authentication. This is great - but be aware, the data behind an embedded report is fully accessible and completely exposed. This is fine for me. The data I've used for this Power BI Demo is completely fictional, but if you are considering embedding a Power BI Report into any kind of webpage, then ensure no sensitive data are exposed.

Publish to Web (public)

Actually, Power BI has recently changed it's settings. The Publish to Web (public) functionality in Power BI was originally turned on by default, but with the new updates to Power BI, Publish to Web(public) is now turned off by default - which is GOOD! It serves a a reminder to stop and think about whether the data we're about to publish out to all and sundry is not of a sensitive nature and is suitable for distribution across the internet. The Power BI Administrator will have to enable the embed code first before the code can be generated.

There are many examples where Power BI visualisations and embedded reports would be the perfect way to distribute information for public consumption - e.g. weather data, rainfall, dam levels, disaster management, air quality...etc - just make sure the data is not of a sensitive nature.

I hope you enjoyed this very quick look at some of Power BI's functionality. Keep a look out for future blogs where I will dive into buttons and bookmarks in more detail.
