Updated: Dec 9, 2023

Welcome to the Iamdata Solutions Asset Management Special Valentines Day Newsletter - 14 February 2023

Happy Valentine's Day, my dear data enthusiasts! Today, I would like to talk about the love of my life and my passion - yep, data and Power BI!

What is Power BI

For those of you who are unfamiliar, Power BI is a data visualisation and business intelligence tool that helps you transform data into stunning visuals and actionable insights. It's a match made in heaven for those of us who love data and the art of storytelling. šŸ’•

Why do I love Power BI - Let me count the ways!

1. Power BI is flexible. Power BI can connect to various data sources and provide insights from multiple data points, giving you the flexibility to use it for any type of project.

2. You can download Power BI Desktop for free. The free version has lots of functionality you can do most things in the free Desktop version including sophisticated analysis.

Power BI is a Microsoft product and, as you would expect, has tight integration with other Microsoft products such as Excel, Azure, and SQL Server and connects to most types of databases.

3. Power BI is user-friendly and designed with the end-user in mind, which means that even those who aren't tech-savvy can easily create beautiful reports and dashboards.

4. Power BI is powerful and offers a range of features and tools that help you unlock the full potential of your data. Power BI allows you to transform and model your data using the powerful Power Query functionality.

What does Power Query do in Power BI? Power Query is the data connectivity and data preparation technology that enables end users to seamlessly import and reshape data from within a wide range of Microsoft products, including Excel, Power BI, Analysis Services, Dataverse, and more.

5. Power BI is constantly improving and constantly adding new features and capabilities, making it even better over time.

Power Pivot is a data modelling and calculation engine. It uses Data Analysis Expression (DAX) language to model data. It also allows you to establish relationships and build complex calculations.

6. Advanced Editor - to build complex calculations.

7. Publish and Share Power BI. After you've built your awesome Power BI Reports, you can publish them and share them with your colleagues. Sharing is the easiest way to give people in your organisation access to your reports. Simply click on the Share button in the dashboard or report and then share it with other users in your organisation, by group, or individual. Coworkers viewing your report or dashboard will be able to see the same data as you, but do not have the rights to edit the data.

With Power BI's cloud-based platform, you can access your data and insights from anywhere, at any time.

8. So many charts, graphs and tables and vast array of templates, styles, and themes, so you can show your data clearly in easy to understand visuals and reports!

9. Create custom visualisations with R and Python.

10. You can set up automatic data refreshes. A Power BI refresh operation can consist of multiple refresh types, including data refresh, OneDrive refresh, refresh of query caches, tile refresh, and refresh of report visuals. Power BI determines the required refresh steps for a given dataset automatically.

Power BI has an active community of users and developers who share tips, tricks, and resources, making it even more accessible and helpful. It's like having a supportive network that helps you succeed.

As a data geek, I have fallen head over heels for Power BI and all the amazing things it can do. From creating interactive dashboards to mapping data, this tool has made my job easier and more fun. It has helped me create beautiful, meaningful reports and visualisations from chaotic and unstructured data.

Happy Valentine's Day! šŸ„°

What are the main things you love best about Power BI?

I have worked on many different projects with my Local Government clients, from designing and developing Power BI Reports, to building SQL Server databases for spatial data, to managing and maintaining the GIS and the Asset Management systems.
